Birdcage

Designed and Constructed by Emily Tracy & Maximilian Marshall as ‘Lumina’ for The Thames Festival, London.

The Birdcage, was a 5 metre high spinning, lit sculpture which was both a static and processional spectacle. Many of the details including shadow puppets and decorative jewels, were made by community participants. 540 participants including schools and play-schemes, older people and families took part in collaborative workshops. The Birdcage was accompanied by a soundtrack created by Ed Tracy, and by two lady Ornithologists, created by Topical Broadcast, street performance company. These characters engaged the audience spotting new bird species with their binoculars.

Emily worked with Theatre designer/artist Sophie Charalambous to run a Camden Summer school with young people 11-18yrs. The young people designed and made Victorian inspired hooped skirts which were internally lit and paraded.

The Birdcage was exhibited on Waterloo Millenium Green, Bankside and Bestival, Isle of Wight. It led the Night Carnival,an extraordinary, vibrant illuminated parade of 1,500 dancers, drummers, lantern-carriers & costumed masqueraders featuring music, dance which took place every year until 2012.
