Lido Love Festival commissioned Emily to create an artwork for the pool. Lido Love is an annual one-night-only arts extravaganza at London’s number one Lido in London Fields, Hackney. The event highlights the hidden history of this remarkable pool.
Seedlings’ lit the pool with 300-lit sprouting lanterns. Pools of yellow green light will floated in the water, and from each pool of light sprung a tendril of green. This installation made reference to the state of the pool before its restoration, when Buddleia ruled and vegetables were grown by squatters, and, what would happen if the pool were no longer chlorinated and cleaned.
Materials: Foam board, plastic cups, glowsticks.
Lido Love 2012 also included participatory theatre from Bad Physics, Cardioke shower raving with The House of Hot Breath, the original Lido band Bon Bon Kaotikai, artist performances from Doug Fishbone and Patrick Coyle, a fancy photo-shoot opportunity with Riitta Ikonen, a chance to learn some synchronised swimming – without getting wet – with Figs in Wigs and Hilary Powell’s beautiful lido film, a human game of Scrabble.
