Artist Statement

Emily Tracy has worked as a visual arts project facilitator and public artist since 1997. She has made large and small scale publicly sited 3-D art works for schools, festivals and outdoor spaces and events. She project manages a small team of artists to assist her in her projects including; lighting technicians, installation crew, build/ construction team, workshop artists, musicians and performers.
Tracy works with the lit form: Lanterns or large scale sculpture. Having trained as a painter she has developed techniques using shadow, colour and a diverse range of materials, including recycled ones, to create extraordinary spectacles which aim to startle, amaze and inspire. These installations often come about through research into local history, architecture, stories and working with a particular group of people and are therefore site-specific. Most recently she has been developing projects which highlight environmental issues through use of materials.
Emily is experienced at engaging and involving people, and creating high quality and exciting art work for public spaces.
“When I design a project I like to create an aspect of the design, which highlights the transformation of materials from something ordinary to extraordinary. This might be making something beautiful from rubbish or lighting a 3d artwork with bulbs and batteries. I find this engages those participants that are 'harder to reach' and illustrates to people how transformation is possible on a small and large scale. I believe this can stay with people, and inspire and give confidence to everyone, to find this spark again in new experiences and activities”.
Between 2004 and 2007 Emily worked collaboratively with Maximilian Marshall as ‘Lumina’, a visual arts company working on outdoor art projects.
Emily has project management experience, managing budgets of up to £30,000.
