The Day of the Dead 2009

A community outreach project for Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ festivities at The British Museum.

Emily Tracy worked with Sophie Charalambous (theatre designer and artist) on this collaborative community and festival project in conjunction with Mandinga Arts.

Working with homeless young people from New Horizons day centre and with members of Latin American Golden Years centre, they made 2 large scale puppets, costumes and performances for the ‘Day of The Dead’ celebrations and procession at The British Museum. The young people from New Horizons made a life size coffin, which held a puppet of Micheal Jackson. They animated the puppet to rise from the dead and dance.

The members of The Latin American Centre made a large figure of Catrina - a rich woman created by the Mexican artist Pousada.

The project involved many different aspects of creativity including puppetry, choreography, costume and construction.
